The Barefoot Counsellor provides a counselling service for children (aged 11 upwards), adolescents, individuals, families, and groups. At the core of The BFC is the belief in your right to autonomy without judgement, and empathy, together with an environment to empower you to move ahead at your own pace in healthy and resilient ways.
Welcome to the Barefoot Counsellor (The BFC). My name is Kim Fry and my pronouns are she/her. The BFC is my expression of freedom, uniqueness and acceptance of myself and others. My belief is that we all need to follow our own path and be true to ourselves. Life can make the journey to finding ourselves challenging, especially for young people, and we all need a little help sometimes. In counselling I encourage an environment of acceptance, empathy, and trust.
I hold a Level 2 and 3 in Counselling Skills and Theory, Level 5 higher diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, BA Hons Degree in Therapeutic Counselling, and Stage 2 Counselling Children and Young People. I am an accredited member of The National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS), DBS checked, and attend monthly clinical supervision and continued professional development (CPD) sessions. I counsel individuals, families, and groups. I specialise in counselling children and young people aged 11 upwards and I work on behalf of the YMCA in schools and colleges. I live with my partner and two children in Kings Cliffe. I am spiritual, fun loving, and a barefoot runner.
If you pause for a moment and remember your own childhood... We all struggled to understand and navigate through the grown up world that we lived in. My experiences of working with children, adolescents and young adults informs my practice along with my own memories of childhood. Through a multitude of creative and playful activities, always led by the young person, can rebuild self-esteem, self-awareness and trust in their sense of self.
My approach is gentle, curious, authentic and mixed with humour if the moment calls for it. I will support your young person to feel positive from our connection as human beings and my aim is to establish an environment of trust, non-judgement, and rapport. I want to get to know them as a person, one human to another. My belief is in your young person's capacity to solve their own problems and encourage them to express their feelings and experiences, where age appropriate.
I offer face to face counselling for those young people who prefer to meet in person. My counselling room is child-friendly, peaceful and safe from interruption, located in Kings Cliffe with accessible parking.
I also offer telephone and online counselling for those young people who prefer to access counselling from the comfort of their own home. If you’re unsure, ask yourself, what form of communication is your young person most at ease with? You decide upon the time, place, and pace of the counselling journey.
Counselling doesn’t have to be facing one another in the same room! We can arrange to meet outdoors at a mutual venue which encourages relaxation and wellbeing in our natural surroundings. We can walk, or sit, or be creative whilst taking in the view. I will work therapeutically and encourage you to reconnect with your natural environment. Research tells us that spending as little as 15 minutes among the trees lowers cortisol levels, boosts the immune system, and reduces anxiety.
My counselling room is located in Kings Cliffe. There's various walks and outdoor spaces that I can recommend in Kings Cliffe or surrounding areas in Stamford or Peterborough. The decision is yours and we can talk through your child's options as part of their consultation.
